{I'm not sure what day this is, so let's just say that it's before the next attack (duh) but after the Valentine's ball. Wherever that is. xD}
Near one large window, right in the corner of the common room (well, it's not actually square or anything so there isn't any corners, but you get what I mean), sat a red-headed girl. It was several days after the Valentine's Ball, at which even she had to admit she had enjoyed herself just a little. She had met friend Alex, after all. Speaking of him, she had just seen him pass through the common room, and they both waved at each other. Thankfully, he hadn't tried to throw any liquid or - worse - food over her today. He was just in passing, to grab his jacket and then leave. Aeryn supposed he was going to meet that pretty, dark-haired girlfriend of his. One couldn't guess these things, however.
The Lioano female had bought her guitar down from her dormitory, but the common room had had people passing through it all day, so she never really got a chance to practice it in peace and quiet. But that could wait, she supposed. Right now, the instrument was propped up against the window sill, next to where she sat. The girl had briefly played on it, trying to figure out the chords to one particular song and failing to, then leaving it. Now, because of that, she was humming the song, singing the words softly beneath her breath as she worked. "Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old and I need something to rely on. So tell me when, you're gonna let me in, I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begi-in."
She had pulled up a chair to the large window, tossing her notebook on the sill, and was now writing. The words had first started out to be those of a simple girl, writing in her diary about the view outside the window, but eventually the tale was twisting, into that of a fairytale. A little boring to read, yes, but fun and challenging to write. Challenging in the fact that you had to start with, 'once upon a time' and end with something along the lines of, 'and they all lived happily ever after with ten thousand kids and a dog'. Well, you know. All stories have to different.
Aeryn was dressed comfortably, as she usually was when it wasn't school. And comfortably was serious for her. As in, jeans so long they completely covered her feet and then some, with a belt that barely managed to keep them up around her waist itself, and a short (maybe it wasn't short, it just looked it because of how low the jeans were) black tee shirt with 'Levi's' across it. There were black Adidas trainers on her feet, ones that looked suspiciously new. They were, presents from her parents, and she hated them, but had to wear them because her Converse practically had holes in them now, and were falling apart big time. But, as soon as she got some money - which would be about, hmm, never - she'd buy some more. She couldn't live without them for that long!
Why, oh why, had she spent all that money on the dress for the ball?
But right now, on a warm Saturday morning, Aeryn was comfortable and relatively pleased with what she was wearing, and in a pretty good mood. Nothing could dampen her spirits. Hang on a sec... was that a spider?

Charlie was, for once, the picture of tranquility that Sunday morning. Yes, you read it right. Morning, tranquil and Charlie. In the same sentence. It was indeed a rare sight to see her awake before noon at the weekends, but as of late, she had been rising earlier each day. It getting was ridiculous. She was dressed before breakfast had finished that morning, and had even managed to grab something - a banana - which she was still currently enjoying.
Dressed casually in a barely decent green pleated skirt, black knee socks and a tight black blouse with the sleeves rolled up, Charlie sauntered through the Common Room with a book open in one hand, her breakfast in the other. Pleasantly tousled blonde hair pulled loosely back from her face, she flung herself onto a couch a little bit away from the window, green eyes never leaving the yellowed pages of her book, and a little frown of concentration on her brow. She never even gave the red haired girl so much as a glance, but half smile when she caught a bit of the song. It was a Muggle one, but she vaguely knew it, and quite liked it. Charlie found herself humming along under her breath, and stopped, almost laughing. She looked over to the window, to see if the other girl had heard her. Apparently she hadn't, but...Grass green eyes widened, and Charlie stiffened up. Was that a...?
"SPIDER!" She shrieked, practically falling off the couch in her haste to stand up. Charlie hurled her book in the general direction of the little beastie, barely missing Aeryn's head. It was quickly followed by the half eaten banana, which hit the window with an amusing splat, and slowly slid down it to flop mushily onto the window sill. She didn't know it either had hit the target, and slowly edged away.
"Did I get it?"

No, Aeryn hadn't heard the other girl's quiet humming, but if she had of, she would have been pleased. It had been a long time since she met a person - or had a friend - that knew the songs she sung, Muggle or otherwise; let along sung or hummed them with her. Since she was a kid, singing had been something that the redhead had enjoyed doing immensely.
The Lioano female had kept her eyes locked onto the moving black dot which was, as she had suspected, a spider. She was frozen, but she was startled at the sound of a hysterical shriek behind her, and jumped. When she had jumped, she had moved a little, which was precisely why the book had missed her head by the tiny space that it did. She turned around for a split second, just in time to see a banana sailing her way, too, and ducked so that that went over her head as the book had. Not that a banana to the head would have done much damage, but still. She could do without it.
"Did I get it?"
Aeryn stared from the pile of objects - underneath which was, hopefully, a dead spider - on the window sill to Charlie, and blinked a couple of times in complete silence before replying, "I think so. I'm not sure." She paused, as if going over something in her mind hesitantly, and then said, "Ugh. Shall I check?" Without waiting for an answer, she crept over to the window (not that creeping would make much of a difference to a tiny spider, but still) and very slowly lifted up the banana skin.
It was the flash of black as the creature crawled, very much alive, out of the skin that alerted her to it's presence once more, and she left out a scream (that was something along the lines of, "OHMYGOD IT'S ALMOST ON ME!!" said very fast), and flung the banana skin back at the window as hard as she could, before grabbing Charlie's book and pounding on it ferociously several times. She stopped when she was pretty much sure that the spider was dead this time - it had to be, unless it was a robot spider or magically enchanted not to die - and wiped the small bits of banana mush off the cover of the book, and then held it out to Charlie.
"Yeah," she said, nodding. "I think it's about as dead as it can be, now."

Charlie graciously took back her slightly sticky book from Aeryn, and grinned. She rather liked the girl's bug destruction tactics.
"I fucking hate bugs," Charlie said, smoothing down her clothes, and sitting back on the couch. She tossed the book beside her, all interest in it thoroughly dispersed, "Especially god damned spiders. They're everywhere in this castle! It's disgusting! You think they'd be able to afford some bug killer, or at least to clean the place every now and again..."
Mini-rant finished, she looked over at the window sill almost guiltily. There was bits of mushy banana all over the glass, and she was pretty lucky she hadn't smashed it with the book either. Someone was going to have to clean that up. She giggled to herself - it wouldn't be her anyway, even if it had been her breakfast.
"Oh, I'm Charlie, by the way," She put in as an after thought, and an attempt to be friendly, "And, er, sorry about almost knocking your block off with my book...Like I said, I hate spiders!"

Aeryn was a little relieved that the other girl didn't flip out over her banana-mush-ified book, and grinned back. She listened to her speak and then replied, "Tell me about it. I hate them, too." She shook her head. "Seriously. It's one of the reasons that Winter is so handy; it kills loads of bugs for us. But then summer comes and along with it are all the spiders and the crane flies with the huge legs and the wasps." She paused, admitting silently that it also bought warmth and happiness, but whatever.
"I wish there was a spell that prevented bugs from coming within a mile of you." Aeryn paused in this slightly ludicrous thought, before adding, "Hey, maybe there is." She followed the blonde's gaze over to the window, and smiled herself. If there hadn't been the danger of a spider in the room, that banana hitting the window and the smudge it left would have been pretty comical. The redhead might have even laughed.
Charlie's introduction of herself bought Aeryn out of her thoughts - those which she was usually lost in - and she said, "That's okay. I fully forgive any possible head-bashing so long as there's a chance that a spider might die because of it. My name's Aeryn."

"Oh Goddd," groaned Charlie, and then laughed, "Don't talk to me about wasps! They're the absolute worst. I'm allergic to them, and bees too...There you are, sitting outside, minding your own business, perhaps innocently eating an ice cream...And bang! They're everywhere! I must admit, I'm a bit of a summer girl though. It's rubbish being cooped up with the bad weather."
Charlie smile slipped a little. Yes, summer was easily her favourite season, bugs or not. It was going to be a pretty weird summer though, now she was missing her fellow beach goddess...She remembered the photograph in the box in her trunk, the one of them at Santa Dominie beach.
"Yeah, that would be an amazing spell. Every chick in the joint would use it! And some of the boys too, come to think of it..." Like Adam...Charlie found her grin again. Reaching back to fix her golden hair which was slipping from the hair tie, "And it's a pleasure to meet you, Aeryn. Real pretty name, by the way. Unusual."

Aeryn cringed, "Dude, that must be awful. I've only been stung a couple of times, and I already hate the damn things. If one comes within a foot of me, I'm up and running in seconds." She laughed. "They usually come around me when I'm in grass and eating, or drinking something out of a can. One got stuck in my hair once. It was awful." She paused, as if thinking about the day that it happened, and then shuddered hard.
Aeryn wasn't much of a beach-goer. She burned easily, and was rather self-conscious about herself so she hardly ever wore a bikini, always a single swimming costume in a plain colour or pattern.
"Yeah," Aeryn agreed. "Wands would be out all over the school. But you could bet your bottom dollar that the guys wouldn't use it in front of the girls. You know what they're like; the large percentage of them have huge egos. Using a bug-repellant-spell wouldn't look good in front of the girls, would it?" She shook her head, and listened to Charlie mention her name. "Thanks. Not many people I know even call me that anymore. My parents call me Ryn. My cousin Caitie used to call me - before we lost touch - Rynnie. It makes a change to be called Aeryn."

"I've been stung once, and that was enough for me," Charlie said with a grimace. Anaphalatic shock was so not a good look. Seriously. She ended up in a hospital with tubes being poked into her neck and all sorts of stuff being stabbed into her. It was an experience she didn't want to repeat, "Actually, I have a really good repellent stuff. It works for wasps, bees, mosquitoes and all sorts of nasty things. I could tell you where to get it, if you'd like. And I totally get what your saying about guys in this school. Seriously, if they're not macho meat heads, then they're gay nut jobs. I only know, like, two nice decent guys here. "
Charlie nodded, listening attentively to her new friend (well, close enough) speak about nick names and cousins and stuff. She smiled wistfully. Mm, normal families were so appealing to her, seeing as her own was really rather fucked up. Pulling a Blood Pop from the waistband of her skirt (where she always had one stored away), unwrapping it, and popping it in her mouth, Charlie shuffled up the couch closer to Aeryn.
"I don't think I have any cousins...Well, none I've met anyway." She said around her weird lollipop, and shrugged, "Are your family pretty close? I wish I had a decent one...."

"Man. What's your allergic reaction? Is it mild, like eye-watering and hives, or serious?" Aeryn paused, and then nodded and added, "Yeah, because, if it's serious, you really do need some good bug spray. And... two? God. Who are they?" The redhead wished that she could say that she knew a decent guy, but nope. She hadn't met that many, but everyone that she had met so far had been an ass. ... Apart from Alex. She'd forgotten about him for a second. "I know one; a guy named Alexander. I bumped into him - quite literally - on the way to the Valentine's Day dance."
Aeryn didn't know what was going through Charlie's head, but if she had of, she would have been surprised. She guessed that you took your 'normal' family for granted, until you lost them and gained a 'fucked up' one like Charlie apparently had. The redheaded Lioano tilted her head to the side when her blonde friend pulled out a lollipop. "What flavour's that?" she asked curiously, eyes trained on the red sweet as it was popped into Charlie's mouth. "Strawberry? Raspberry?" She couldn't get any further from the truth with those guesses, really.
"My family aren't that close anymore, and the only cousins that I ever really met were the five on my dad's side. They're names were..." She paused, forgetting the family names for a second. "Caitriona, Lauren-Kate, Violetta, Jason and Jack. We lost touch because Jason got us taken to the police station one night when I stayed over. Long story. My dad blew up, though, he went ballistic, even though Jace barely did anything that bad. Just stole his dad's car and took us all out drinking." She paused. "Okay, so maybe he wasn't a saint, but it wasn't as if he'd murdered anyone."

"Hives? Pft, I wish. My throat closes off and I stop breathing. A lot of fun that is - not!" Charlie rolled her eyes, and laughed it off. She'd really rather not swell up or get hives, but she guessed an allergy was an allergy and it couldn't be helped. "Welll, let's see...Um. There's Adam. I guess. Bit of a wimp, but he's nice. He's in Lioano too. And I met this guy called Cal once - he was quite nice. Pretty buff, actually. Oh, and the boy my friend used to go out with was apparently not bad. I never got to meet him though..."
Charlie took out the pop, and licked her lips which was slightly smudged with the red colour, enjoying the salty, metallic taste. Strawberry? Raspberry? Hardly!
"Blood, actually. Yumm!" Charlie said, sticking it back in her gob, "Want one? I've got another one here. And your cousin Jason sounds like a right laugh. At least you have what can pass as a normal family. I could tell you stories about mine that'd make your hair turn grey!"

Aeryn blinked. "So," she said thoughtfully. "Obviously quite severe." She shook her head and smiled sympathetically, before their conversation turned back to guys. "Lucky you. At least you've at least heard of three, even if you haven't met one of them. I only knew of one before now." She shook her head again. "Some school this is, but it doesn't matter much to me anyway." Yep. Because she didn't date.
For the second time, the redhead blinked in surprise, and she said slowly, "Blood?" That was... strange. And a little gross. But when she was offered one... "What the heck. Sure, if you don't mind giving me one, that is." Hey, why the hell not? It was good to try new things, right?
"JaceFace?" Aeryn said, grinning and remembering suddenly the nickname Cait used to give the older male. "Yeah, he was. He used to take us out all the time. It was pretty fabbity fab, until my dad flipped out and stopped it all. Jackass. Since then, Jason and Jack kind of... didn't like me anymore. They called me a snob and they wouldn't talk to me anymore when I phoned or anything. Only Caitriona did, but even she stopped after a while." Aeryn shrugged and, after hearing Charlie's comment about her own family, added, "Really?"

"Mmm, yes. Quite severe -but hey, I'm a tough girl, I can handle it!" Charlie said, with theatrical enthusiasm and a giggle, "And boys, boys, boys...More trouble than they're worth, to be honest. I think I'm going to pack the whole malarkey in, become a lesbian and join a nunnery. Or something like that...."
Charl was quite surprised when Aeryn accepted the offered blood pop. Most people went green at the thought of it. Sometimes it even creeped her out a little bit when she thought about what could be really in it, but after a while, she shrugged it off. Think of it like black pudding, she told herself. She fished around for the other lolly, and produce one from her waistband again, and chucked it over to Aeryn, "Bon appetite."
Charlie actually laughed out loud at the nickname for Jason. Some people had all the best nicknames, "So you guys don't talk anymore? That sucks. I don't talk to anyone in my family, if I can help it. Couldn't talk to half of them, even if I wanted to!"

"I've always been a bit of a wimp when it comes to pain," Aeryn admitted, shrugging. It was true. She didn't show it often, and she never cried, but pain frightened her more than it should, whether it was physical or mental. The redhead then snorted. "Lesbian? I wouldn't go that far. Guys are still nice to look at, I suppose." Jesus, had she just said that? She thought she was past the whole crushing on boys thing. Oh well; she just needed the right guy, she supposed.
Oh shut up, Aeryn. Stop thinking so much.
Aeryn caught the blood pop, and unwrapped it. She paused, looking at it's red, glistening surface with suspicion, before she shoved in her mouth. "Ugh." The strong taste hit her fast, and she made a face and took the pop back out again, holding it by the stick and swallowing. Then she tentatively licked at it again several times, before putting it back in her mouth again. She glanced at Charlie - who she assumed had been watching - and said, "You just need to get used to the taste."
Jason didn't think so. He was forever glaring at his sister and cousin when they called him that, as they had made sure to do it in a public, crowded place every time. "Yeah, it kinda does suck. But I guess I got used to it, after a while. Do you miss your family?"
